Quick out of the blocks
Summer is here and British Airways’ email is just about ready to throw some energy into your inbox with the use of some great images, showing a strong and bold aesthetic, just like our amazing athletes!
The offers in this email are not necessarily direct towards a sale, but we think the idea here is to generate a feel of trust and support through patriotic sponsorship. The subject line: “Get closer to the Games with Access London 2012“ could definitely use some work, it’s a little too long and the title of the newsletter ‘Access London 2012′ is a bit vague.
Although, there is some great copy in the “the advantage of home advantage” section to generate a sense of patriotic passion. Overall we feel the graphics and design of this email have carried the email, but we still love it.

#1. Top Loaded links – These links are good to include from the outset, it is one of the first things the user will see, so they will know where to scroll to find these links if they read down the email. We especially like these as they are not overloaded with every possible offer British Airways has and they are subtle enough that it isn’t too bold against the main header image. The colours are chosen well to blend in with the colour scheme.
#2. Header Image – The header image is lively and well executed, the athletes are cropped well to create a pleasant action style photo collage and without any Photoshop blunders (which you would expect from a company like British Airways right?!).All of the images within the email have been selected with the company colours in mind, or to complement the email templates palette, even the social icons at the bottom conveniently fit in with the company branding. Keeping the template light has really helped provide a greater visual impact to the images in the email.
#3. Personalisation – British Airways prides itself on it’s quality of service and the tone of your email should reflect this too, being properly addressed at the start and signed off at the bottom will create a sense of prestige. Don’t forget these details, you’ll come across more polite and trust worthy.
#4. Keeping things simple – We really like the way the structural design has been kept simple. This will also continue the idea of quality by being well laid out, as a cluttered email will reflect badly and look careless. The result of which will probably end up in the trash. This single column is easy to execute and unlikely to break in terms of html.
#5. Social Tactics – By combining the Olympics with their own Facebook page acts as a “double whammy”, people could be curious of either the Olympics or British Airways itself and gain some more social followers and traffic.
#6. Notice about further emails - The notification at the bottom of the email is excellent to let the user know that they will be getting more emails about this subject, this then means that any further emails can be opted out with the link underneath and does not come across as spam.
#7. Other info - It is great that British Airways have added some additional and legal information at the bottom of this email, but we feel the copy could have been adjusted and shortened so then it isn’t such a large block of text.
